Pharmacists represent the third largest healthcare professional group in the world. The majority of pharmacists practice in private retail pharmacies, few in hospitals and other medical facilities. However, pharmacists are hardly ever mentioned as key health professional. They tend to run under “others”. Pharmacists have been a neglected healthcare workforce. Yet, pharmacists can make a unique contribution to the outcome of drug therapy, to their patients’ quality of life and to public health. Pharmacists have a critical role to play and a gap to fill in the health workforce.

Pharmacists do a lot more than count pills and fill bottles. Their roles increasingly are evolving to deal more with doctors and patients to determine the most appropriate drug regimens. To be successful in the industry, a pharmacist must have:

• 1. Communication Skills: A great pharmacist should have excellent communication skills and be able to speak on a professional level with peers and doctors, as well as in laymen�s terms to patients. A great pharmacist is also able to communicate with people despite possible language barriers and other factors of diversity.

Kehadiran Apotek K 24 cukup fenomenal. Dalam waktu singkat pertumbuhan jumlah outletnya cukup signifikan. Apotek K 24 dikembangkan dengan model franchise. Saya pernah berkunjung ke stand Apotek K 24 pada pameran franchise di JHCC tahun 2006 yang lalu. Saya berkesempatan pula untuk mendapatkan penjelasan singkat tentang model franchise Apotek K 24 yang ditawarkan. Menurut pengamatan saya pengunjung yang mampir ke stand Apotek K 24 kebanyakan adalah calon investor yang ingin membuka usaha. Sayangnya saya tidak tahu persis berapa banyak diantara calon investor yang berkunjung itu berprofesi sebagai apoteker.

Sejatinya dunia farmasi adalah dunia sosial. Obat sebagai salah satu output profesi Apoteker adalah barang yang bersifat sosial karena menyangkut kesehatan masyarakat. Namun tidak bisa dipungkiri, dalam prakteknya obat tidak lebih dari komoditi dagang.

Tengok saja prosesnya. Pada awal diadakannya riset untuk menemukan obat pasti sudah diperhitungkan berapa biaya yang dikeluarkan dan berapa lama biaya tersebut kembali. Pada waktu tahap komersialisasi, obat baru hasil riset tersebut akan dipatenkan. Karena bersifat eksklusif, maka harga jualnya mahal. Setelah paten habis, muncul me too product yang harganya juga masih relatif mahal meski ada obat generiknya.

Walmart, sebuah jaringan hypermarket di Amerika menawarkan paket obat dengan harga $4 untuk pemakaian selama sebulan. Jenis penyakit yang di cover ada berbagai macam. Dan obat yang dipakai adalah obat generik. Mereka menamakan program ini dengan sebutan $4 prescription.

Apakah ini sebuah strategi marketing yang inovatif? Tunggu dulu.
